Khakiweed/Matt Chafflower (Alternanthera pungens)

Khakiweed is a annual or perennial, depending on the location, which develops from a thick tap root. The stems of khakiweed are covered with hair. Khakiweed has a prostrate growth habit. The leaves of khakiweed form opposite and are round to oblong with the tip being the widest part.

Khakiweed reproduces from seeds. The flowers are

white and form in stiff spiny heads, solitarily, or in groups of 2 to 3. The flowers form at the nodes. Flowering occurs during the summer months.

Khakiweed is a warm season weeds that occurs in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and New Mexico. Internationally it has been found in parts of Africa and on Pacific islands.

 

 

Cultural Practices:
Khakiweed is found in the most southern hot humid portion of the United States. It is found on sandy soils. It can be found in turf, pastures and roadsides. Khakiweed is not controlled by mowing due to its prostrate growth habit.

Herbicide Use:
Make your postemergent herbicide application to khakiweed that is young and actively growing.
