Description

Orchardgrass is a perennial grass that is blue-green in color. The leaves are folded in the bud, the ligule is very tall membranous, and auricles are absent. Orchardgrass only contains tillers, resulting in clumps. Orchardgrass can tolerate close mowing. The roots are very fibrous and dense. Orchardgrass remains green throughout the year. The seedhead is a stiff-branched panicle. Seedheads occur from late spring through mid summer. Orchardgrass is found throughout the United States.

Orchardgrass is a perennial, coarse textured grass. Orchardgrass is very competitive in other grasses. Orchardgrass tolerates full sun to partial shade. Orchardgrass does not form large patches, as it does not spread by either rhizomes or stolons. The best way to prevent the introduction of orchardgrass is to use clean seed.

Make your post-emergence herbicide application to orchardgrass that is actively growing and in the 2 leaf to flower stage of growth. Control is only available with a non-selective control product.
